Adult Day Service Meets Special Needs

Billie Lou attends our adult day center twice a week, along with about 48 others. A lot of the folks in our adult day program have some form of dementia. Not Billie Lou. She’s smart and articulate. She loves people and loves to be with them. After talking with her for a few minutes, you can’t help walking away with a smile on your face.

She’s had a heart for people for a long time. She and her husband served as missionaries for 19 years in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Her husband still makes mission trips there every summer, and it’s important to Billie Lou that her husband continues doing that. She doesn’t want him to feel like he has to spend every minute with her. But she uses a wheelchair and needs assistance during the day. That’s what brought her to the Adult Day Center in the first place. She wants her husband to have some time for himself.

“We really lucked out when we came here,” Billie Lou commented. “The people here are wonderful. I can’t say enough good things about them. They think of everything you need it, before you even have a chance to ask for it.”

Everyday there are a variety of group activities, as well as individual activities, to choose from at our Adult Day Service program. Some folks might enjoy making greeting cards, others may like weaving a decorative hanging.

If you are outgoing, you may like theme parties, exercising, listening to live music, or even dancing. If you’re the quiet type, you may prefer to play a quiet game, have a friendly conversation, paint, draw, or work a crossword puzzle. But no one has to ‘go along with the crowd’, so to speak.

This program is for individuals with physical and/or mental impairments in need of socialization in a supervised setting. This service allows the caregiver, usually a spouse, a chance to run errands, make medical appointments, or just have some free time of their own. Sometimes our customers live with their adult children, who have fulltime jobs. These families need help to keep Mom or Dad at home, and allow their children to continue working. We provide that help.

Before a person enters the program, an evaluation is done to determine if the program is appropriate for the individual's needs. The person must also be 60 years of age or older and live in Clermont County.

Once accepted, an individual may attend the program from one to five days per week. Service is provided on a sliding scale and financial assistance is available for qualified participants. Each day a hot lunch, and morning and afternoon snacks are served. Nurses and trained home health aides are on staff to help with medications and personal needs. And transportation is available to every nook and cranny of Clermont County.
